I love the Philippines, that’s why I decided to stay here for good since 1999 together with my family.

What Philippine locations have you visited?

Manila, Cebu, many different places in whole Mindanao.

What are your opinions on the following things about the Philippines?

     Places

I love those places, where nature is still intact, beaches, mountains.

     Food

Philippine food is very different and strange, but I almost eat everything, because I – feel like a Pinoy.

     Culture

I like pinoy music and dances (my wife was an ethnic dancer before).

     People

I learned a lot of Pinoy hospitality and friendly people, however I noticed also changes here.

What do you dislike about the Philippines?

I dislike corruption and sometimes too much ‘plastic’.

Jan van Dam

Nationality: My nationality is Dutch from Holland.

Occupation/Location: I am retired and currently living in Antipolo City, Rizal. In my working life, back home in Holland, I was working with a computer factory. My job was customer service specialist. I was handling the ‘customer care’ department, solving problems from unsatisfied customers and their complaints.

How did you find about the Philippines?

About 24 years ago I have met my wife in Manila. We have been married now for almost 22 years. 21 years we have been living in Holland. I have visited the Philippines several times before we finally decided to move here.

What Philippine locations have you visited?

During my visits before, I have visited the wide surroundings of Metro Manila, Bicol with its famous Mayon Volcano, Boracay, Subic area and Tagaytay with Taal Volcano, to name a few. And I have seen the ‘butanding’ or shark-whales near Donsol. Now we are living here we are planning to visit much more places and islands in this country. On my list for the most important places are among others: Palawan, Banaue rice terraces, Bohol and the cities of Cebu, Davao and Baguio.

What are your opinions on the following things about the Philippines?

     Places

Places and cities in the Philippines could do more to keep their areas clean. Lots of streets, rivers and open lots are filled with garbage and other stuff. The local government should put more garbage cans everywhere and have them emptied once or more a day. The street cleaners can do that and point to the people who are just throwing their garbage that the right place for it is INTO the garbage can. Make throwing garbage in the street punishable.

     Food

The Philippines has delicious food, as long as it is freshly cooked. Personally I do not trust the food stalls along the street and in food courts in the malls. Of course there are also dishes I do not like: balut, bagoong and a few vegetables. I also do not like the local bread very much. They are putting too much sugar in it.

     Culture

Philippines has a rich culture. It has lots of influences from the Spanish (even in the language). This results in a lot of fiesta’s and colorful festivals. One thing I cannot understand is their superstition for a lot of things.

     People

Filipinos are very friendly people. They always smile. But I am not sure if they always mean it. I do hear also signs that a large group do not like foreigners a lot.

What do you dislike about the Philippines?

There are a lot of things I do not like. I just name a few: Filipino time (being always late on appointments) , the Filipino way of handling (throwing everywhere) garbage, traffic and the ‘white skin tax’ we have to pay. White skin tax is the extra money sellers and taxi drivers add to their normal prizes when they see that a foreigner approaches them.

What do you like about the Philippines?

I like the scenery of the Philippines, the beautiful landscapes, the scenic beauty. The colorful flowers. The delicious fruits. The fresh seafood. The climate. And a lot more.

Your favorite place/s in the Philippines.

How did you find about the Philippines?

On a map when I was 5 years old, and then read the “Children of the World” Encyclopedia. Nowadays I find information via search engines.

What Philippine locations have you visited?

Manila, Palawan, Luzon, Cebu, Bohol, Boracay, Mindoro, Busuanga, Panglao.

What are your opinions on the following things about the Philippines?

     Places

Awesome places! I don’t know which is my favourite as there are so many beautiful places and everywhere are “Kodak moments!” I particularly like Palawan, in particular Honda Bay and El Nido area in the North. The rice terraces and old villages in the Banuae area are amazing, and so is exploring the Sagada area.

     Food

Frankly speaking – food is not a reason I visit the Philippines. Fresh seafood is very good but generally speaking, restaurant food is not too good and most of the time well below the temperature at which it should be consumed. I always have to ask the waiters to warm up the food.

     Culture

Philippines is certainly not a top destination to me for culture, but there are some colourful festivals which should not be missed.

     People

People is certainly a reason for visiting the Philippines. I have been to 93 countries and the Philippines rank among the top 5 for “friendly people and easy communication”. Many people, in particular kids and teens, speak English well enough for easy communication. They’re not afraid either to practice their English on foreign visitors. I love the Filipinos!

What do you dislike about the Philippines?

The “not hot enough cooked food”

What do you like about the Philippines?

The seafood, scenery, people, diving.

Many in Luzon; Metro Manila, Bagiuo, Tagaytay, Zambales, Pangasinan, Laguna.

What are your opinions on the following things about the Philippines?

     Places

Often hard to reach because of heavy traffic and transport problems.

     Food

Local food (and fruit) is often more acceptable than imitation western meals.

     Culture

A curious mixture of Malay, Spanish, American with a dash of Chinese.

     People

Very friendly, but can be overwhelming with their attention to a foreigner. The extended family is all powerful, and sometimes nothing happens unless the whole ‘clan’ approves.

What do you dislike about the Philippines?

The traffic, heat, and difficulty in actually getting things done if ‘red tape’ is involved; a few pesos on ‘the side’ can help. The public toilets are atrocious and often don’t exist. People are not time conscious and never are on time for appointments.

What do you like about the Philippines?

The respect and attention given to elders and elderly. This even extends to the older siblings. This doesn’t happen now in the west.

What are your opinions on the following things about the Philippines?

     Places

Although many places in the Philippines are very similar there are small things that make each an every place in the Philippines unique.

     Food

Food in the Philippines is the most unique food in the whole world. It is also a very big part of their culture to make sure every one gets fed and has food. Everyone will offer you food even if they don’t even know you. Also every place has its own unique way of preparing and cooking different dishes. The food is my favorite part of being in the Philippines.

     Culture

Culture is a huge part of the Philippines and is very prevalent no mater where you are in the country you will experience the very solid culture that is here. Culture exists in every aspect of the country.

     People

No matter where you go in the Philippines you are going to meet nice people. Also another thing about people is anywhere you go you will run into people. Even in the most far out forests and mountains there are going to be people living there. It is almost impossible to find a place in the Philippines where there are no people living. They are everywhere and always very nice people.

What do you dislike about the Philippines?
