     Food

Filipino foods are generally tasty and spicy. From their Spanish, American, Japanese and Malay influences, Filipino dish offers a healthy, unique, and delightful experience for all. Filipinos are also known for eating exotic delicacies like balot (1-day old chic), adidas (chicken feet), bitukang manok (chicken intestines), palaka (frogs), paniki (bats), sawa (python), dagang bukid (rats), etc..

How did you find about the Philippines?

Traveling is one of my passions; it is something I love to do so obviously I am always studying the world map and different countries where I could plan my next trip to!

What Philippine locations have you visited?

I was able to visit a wide range of locations: Smokey Mountain, right outside of Manila; Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute, Davao; waterfalls/environmental organizations, outside of Davao; (Lake) Taal Volcano, Luzon; Dumaguete; Apo Island; Cebu; Chocolate Hills, Bohol.

What are your opinions on the following things about the Philippines?

     Places

Anywhere in the Philippines.

     Food

Rice, rice and riiiice…with every meal! The food is definitely delicious – I was worried before my trip to SE Asia because I’m a vegetarian and much of the country’s cuisine consists out of meat and fish. However, because I also lived with some of the locals, I ate some fish. And although there is a ton of western cuisine options, I highly recommend eating Filipino food. For vegetarians: Pinakbet, (Fresh) Lumpia, Suman, or look on: http://www.filipinovegetarianrecipe.com/. For you carnivores there are plenty of options; and for the brave I definitely suggest Balut!! :-D.

     Culture

The Philippines has an extremely rich culture! The country has been under Spanish, Japanese, and American occupation and it is amazing to still see each of the country’s influences.

     People

Without a doubt, THE friendliest group of people I have ever met. They are always smiling, and willing to help another out. They are curious and love asking questions.

What do you dislike about the Philippines?

The poverty; as of June 2008, the Filipino population is slightly over 96 million, of which over 80% live on less than $2 a day! A must see is Smokey Mountain, located right outside (+/- 10 min) of the country’s capital, Manila. It is a landfill and is home to over 1,000 families! Long story short, it’s awful and unacceptable. For more info, look on my travel blog and please do not hesitate to contact me to see how you can help!

What do you like about the Philippines?

Amazing diving! Definitely go scuba diving if you get the chance; you can’t beat the prices. Also, just word of advice for any of your traveling destinations: Get off the beaten path! I know it’s easier said than done, but it’s so worth it. Get to know the locals, get the “real” experience. It can be done with just one question: “Where do the locals go?”

     Food

Love the BBQ, especially the pork chops. Unbelievable Prices!.

     Culture

Awesome, laid back, Filipino time folks.

     People

What do you dislike about the Philippines?

I dislike it when Expats come here and constantly put the place down. There’s more to be done to help the hunger of the Philippines. I once had an experience when children rushed to get the scraps off my table when I left an outdoor restaurant. I’m not complaining about the children. I want to see things to be done to help people, to better them selves. One thing I don’t like is the lack of aircon! It’s hard to find resources to learn how to hear and actually speak Visayan and other dialects. I’m eager to learn more about the people and I know I can’t until I learn the language of the people I encounter from day to day.

What do you like about the Philippines?

The prices are great, though I worry that too often the low prices are breaking the back of hard working Filipino. The friendly people, the beaches, the BBQ, and most of all the Filipina.
